Assignment 1:

Reading Quiz:
1. Describe one way in which “Every image embodies a way of seeing”. (John Berger reading)
2. What kind of camera does Wendy Richmond use for her Public Privacy project?
3. Why does she choose to use that type of camera? How does it relate to her project?
Answers:
1. As John Berger writes in his article, "Every image embodies a way of seeing." This is because "seeing comes before words." What we see focuses on the ways we use our vision, movement, and sense of touch. "An image is a sight which has been recreated or reproduced." Our perception of an image depends solely on our way of seeing, not what we necessarily "see."
2. Wendy Richmond uses her camera phone for her Public Privacy project.
3. Wendy Richmond uses her camera phone because "it is like a periscope, allowing me to stare without being noticed." She also uses her phone because it is a 21st century tool that almost everyone has which makes it less obvious that she is taking pictures of the people and things around her. As far as anyone knows, she may as well be texting or even web web searching.
